CRIME Gunmen kill trader, colleague during operation in Edo

- From Usman A. Bello, Benin

Gunmen suspected to be assassins have reportedly killed the President of the Lagos Street Traders Association, Comrade David Ohenhen, in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.

It was also gathered that the gunmen mistakenly shot dead one of their gang members during the operation and dumped the body along the road.

Late Comrade Ohehen was killed at his residence at No 2 Ehi Street, off Eboniyeke Street in Egor LGA.

The bereaved wife, Evelyn, who spoke to journalists, said the gang member was shot by his colleagues during a struggle with her husband.

According to her, the gunmen gained access to their house when she opened the iron door after a knock thinking they were neighbours who wanted to charge their phones.

“Upon entering, one of the gunmen pointed a gun at her husband and ordered me to leave the room. As I was begging him to tell me what they wanted and leave my husband alone, my husband pounced on him,”

They dragged themselves to the door. As my husband was about to throw him off the stairs, his colleague rushed out from one of the rooms where our children were sleeping and fired a shot at my husband,” she said.

She explained that the bullet hit her husband and in the process also killed his colleague.

She said the attack came after her husband returned from court to respond to a case of alleged financial misappropriation levelled against him by some executive members of the association.

The State Police Public Relations officers (PPRO), DSP Moses Nkombe, who confirmed the incident saying that three persons have been arrested over the matter.
