- From Ibrahim Musa Giginyu, Kano

The Tijjani Umar led faction of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) yesterday announced that N45 million is being set aside as prize money for the three winners that will emerge in the Kwese league finals scheduled for this Saturday. Speaking during a press conference in Kano, Umar revealed that the winner in the Saturday finals will go home with N20 million, the second placed team will take N15 million while N10 million will go to the third team.

According to him, the money was from Kwese, the sole sponsors of basketball in Nigeria.

“Our zeal to ensure a better welfare package to the participating teams and the players is what made us for the first time in history of basketball in Nigeria to have such amount of money given to winners. We have also told the players to concentrate on the game and allows us deal with the federation politics,” said Umar.

He also confirmed receiving a letter from basketball world governing body FIBA, giving the two parties an ultimatum of 30th November to sort things out.

“The letter from FIBA is clear and unambiguous. I am happy that the letter had spelt-out what should be done and for once, I believe that letter will bring us back to do things the way things should be done. The letter also gave us the 30th of November to conduct elections,” he revealed.
