- From Abdullateef Aliyu, Lagos

A five-day training on nonviolence and ethnic harmony for agitators from all parts of the country has ended in Lagos with leaders of ethnic groups and agitators embracing one another and declaring support for one Nigeria.

The training organized by a non-governmental organization (NGO), Foundation for Ethnic Harmony in Nigeria (FEHN) brought together leaders of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Arewa Transformation and Empowerment Initiative (ATEI), Miyyeti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria (MACABAN), Oduduwa Republic, among others.

The training facilitated by Emory University, Atlanta Georgia, USA came in the wake of national tensions over calls for secession and self-determination by various groups. They are expected to proceed to the US university for more training on non-violence.

Participants from IPOB founded by Nnamdi Kanu were led by his brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu who declared that their agitation for Biafra was anchored on galvanizing the government towards treating every section of the country with equity and justice.

According to Kanu’s brother who spoke with Daily Trust, IPOB is a nonviolent movement even as he urged members of the group to remain peaceful.

He said, “Nobody is against the unity of Nigeria as a matter of fact. What Nnamdi Kanu is very concerned about is to attack those policies that are affecting us as a people. We need a new system that would favour everyone in terms of equity and justice for everybody. My message is for people to remain nonviolent. Agitation is allowed anywhere in the world.”
