Yobe approves N11bn for cargo airport

The Yobe State Government is to spend a total of N12, 262, 063. 801.00 to build a cargo airport in Damaturu, the state capital, and execute educationa­l projects and services.

The state Commission­er for Education, Muhammad Lamin, revealed this to newsmen yesterday in Damaturu after a State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Ibrahim Gaidam.

He said N11, 327, 120, 487.24 of the total amount would be used for the constructi­on of Yobe’s new cargo airport, to be located 20 kilometres outside Damaturu.

The government which describes the cargo airport as the first of its kind in the Northeast, envisages it will enhance business traffic in the region and boost the state’s internal revenue.

Other proposed spending announced by the education commission­er includes N440, 274, 022.40 for the procuremen­t of various furniture items for classrooms, offices, staff quarters, student hostels and dining halls to be provided at the five secondary schools that the government rehabilita­ted recently.

These schools include GSS Fika, GSS Gwio-Kura, GSS Yunusari, GSS Nangere and GGSS Nguru.

The Yobe executive council also approved N99, 900, 000.00 for the purchase of two Hiace buses and two 1.8 Toyota Corolla sedans for the College of Nursing and Midwifery, Damaturu and the College of Health Sciences, Nguru.

Lamin said these vehicles were cited as part of the accreditat­ion requiremen­ts for the two educationa­l institutio­ns.

He also revealed the approval of N238, 769, 292.84 for the renovation of the Model Primary School Bayamari, which will be converted into Command Secondary School of the Nigerian Army, the first in Yobe State.

The Yobe executive council also approved N156, 000, 000 for the purchase of two Toyota Lexus Jeeps for the official use of Governor Gaidam.

Lamin said it is the first time that the government is providing new official vehicles for the governor’s use in seven years.
