Police search for owners of bus used for robbery
The Katsina State Police Command has apprehended one Bashir Raba Mohammed of Rijiyar Lemu Quarters, Kano State, who ferried illicit drugs and cannabis disguised as a military officer.
The command’s spokesman, DSP Gambo Isah, said in a statement that the suspect was arrested when he visited the Daura Central Police Station in full army camouflage on a motorcycle requesting for a police report in respect of lost particulars of the motorcycle.
He said the DPO became suspicious and made some checks on the suspect which revealed that Bashir Raba Mohammed was not a military personnel but an imposter.
When interrogated, the suspect confessed to have been operating drug-Indian hemp syndicate, transporting same from Kano to Daura on his motorbike using the uniform as a shield. The police in Katsina State are searching for the owners of a Peugeot J5 bus with registration number MLF 125 SA abandoned by armed robbers.
The bus, which was abandoned during a hot pursuit by police, was conveying items stolen from a telecommunications mast.
The spokesman of the Katsina State Police Command, DSP Gambo Isah, told Daily Trust that the robbers, who were armed, tied the security man guarding the mast, Zubairu Abdul, before carrying out the robbery.
He said the robbers, about five, attacked the mast at Ragogo village in Zangon Daura, and carted away 15 inverter batteries, one generator battery and three solar chargers.
On receipt of a distress call, Isah said the police mobilised and chased the robbers, who abandoned the bus on sighting them.
“We are on their trail using the bus which we recovered with the stolen items. I assure you we shall fish them out so that the law will take its course,” he added.
In a related development, a suspected armed robber has been gunned down by the police during a shoot-out in Katsina.
The robber is believed to be among the eight that operate from Dajin Mari Forest of Dandume LGA of the state and invaded the village of Tumburkai.
DSP Gambo Isah said the robbers had tried to force their way into the house of one Alhaji Sufiyanu but were repelled by a team of mobile policemen in the area.
He said the robbers engaged the police in a gun duel, which led to the death of one of the hoodlums.
