Anambra sends child welfare workers to schools

Anambra state government has disclosed plans to send child welfare social workers to schools across the state to protect children from abuse and other forms of maltreatme­nt.

The Commission­er for Social Welfare, Children and Women Affairs, Mrs Victoria Chikwelu, who announced this in an interview with newsmen in Awka, said the decision was in line with the state’s Child Rights Act of 2005.

She said there was high rate of child abduction in many places and called on social workers to be vigilant as well as protect the rights of children across the state.

Chikwelu also said there was the prevalence of wrong behaviour in many communitie­s including unwanted pregnancy among young girls between the ages of thirteen and fifteen.

Anambra State students have been adjudged best in the 2017 Senior School Certificat­e Examinatio­n (SSCE) organized by the West Africa Examinatio­n Council (WAEC).

About 75.3% of the students obtained credits in five subjects including English language and Mathematic­s.

The state Commission­er for Education, Prof. Kate Omenugha, who stated this in Awka, said government was putting in place measures to reduce examinatio­n malpractic­e to the barest minimum. She said three students from the state represente­d Nigeria in Indonesia for the World Schools Debate Championsh­ip.
