Big guns advance in AITEO Cup

remier league teams have booked their passage to the quarterfin­al round of the men’s 2017 AITEO Cup after the Round of 16 matches were played across the country yesterday. Among the winners were 2016/2017 Nigeria Profession­al Football League winners Plateau United who edged out Akwa Starlets 2-1 to book a quarter-final place.

Akwa United defeated visiting Shooting Stars of Ibadan 5-1 in Uyo to reach the last eight, while Sunshine Stars eliminated Ngwa FC 3-1 to progress to the quarter-final, the same result FC IfeanyiUba­h recorded to dispatch Heartland FC of Owerri.

ABS FC also eliminated Unicem Rovers 1-0, while Osun United bundled out El-Kanemi Babes with a 2-1 win.

However, Niger Tornadoes and FC Abuja will replay their match on Saturday at the Confluence Stadium in Lokoja after the tie ended 0-0. The clash between Katsina United Feeders and Ekiti United also ended 1-1 and the replay will take place on Saturday at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina.

In the women’s category, Confluence Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels and Nasarawa Amazons qualified for the quarter-finals as four matches will be replayed on Saturday.

Confluence Queens defeated Sure Babes 3-0 to advance, Edo Queens hammered Bayelsa Queens Feeders 3-1, Nasarawa Amazons pounded Beautiful Tours 10-0 to progress, just as Rivers Angels whitewashe­d Women FC 9-0 Ben to book their quarter-final spot.

Pelican Stars and FC Robo Queens will replay in Lagos on Saturday after a 1-1, Jokodolu Babes also played 0-0 with Abia Angels to set up a replay on Saturday in Umuahia. Osun Babes and Ibom Angels will also replay on Saturday after a 1-1 while Sunshine Queens who drew 0-0 with Bayelsa Queens will also replay on Saturday in Nembe, Bayelsa State.
