Auto bird cage catches farmers’ interest

-

A cage that has been configured to automatically feed birds was on display yesterday at the AGRIKEXPO/NABG conference held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

The exhibitor, Mimidoo Nyikor, told Daily Trust that the cage was built in such a way that it automatically feeds the birds. She said there are bowls that serve as food and water suppliers, respectively.

Attached to the cage is a button that when pressed, served the food from the supplier bowls to all the smaller bowls in each of the partitions.

She said the cage which costs 85,000 has a carrying capacity of 90 birds and is divided into three tiers that have 30 partitions each. The partitions are a small enclosure that has the capacity for carrying three birds each.

Nyikor also stated that there is an automated debeaker that cuts the beaks of birds without causing bleeding to the birds.

She added that the essence of de-beaking is to turn blunt the sharp beaks. “This process helps in reducing the mortality rate of the birds because even when they peck at each other, the blunt beaks would cause no harm,’’ she said.

She said the de-beaker can be used to generate money as it can be rented out to other farmers.

There were also on display, automatic cooling systems that could be used to moderate harsh weather conditions that the birds may face.
