Late Lagos Chief Imam, champion of peaceful coexistence – Sultan
The Sultan of Sokoto and PresidentGeneral, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Mohammad Sa’ad Abubakar, yesterday extolled the virtues of the late Chief Imam of Lagos, Sheikh Garuba Akinola Ibrahim, describing him as a bridge builder and champion of peaceful coexistence among the diverse people of Nigeria.
The Sultan spoke at the eighth day prayer (Fidau) held for the late Chief Imam who died on Sunday September 24.
The Sultan said the late Chief Imam was a selfless public servant, astute administrator and a trustworthy leader.
The Fidau, held at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Open ground, attracted prominent personalities and scholars, with Governor Akinwunmi Ambode represented by his Deputy, Dr. Idiat Adebule.
Ambode commended the Muslim Community of Lagos and the Central Mosque’s Committee for maintaining the peace and harmony since the demise of the Chief Imam.
Renowned Islamic Scholar and Head of Marcas, Sheikh Habeebullah Al- Ilory and National Missioner and Chief Imam of Ansarudeen Society of Nigeria, Sheikh Ahmad Abdulrahman in their separate lectures reminded all and sundry that the fate which befell the Chief Imam would be the lot of every mortal.
The Lagos chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), in its condolence by its Secretary, Elder Israel Akinadewo, said the late Chief Imam “will never be forgotten in Lagos for his religious tolerance and the peaceful relationship he had with the Christian Community.”
