Candido tasked residents on unity

- By Taiwo Adeniyi

The Chairman Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abdullahi Adamu Candido, has said Nigeria has strived hard to attain unity and urged citizens to unite in building a nation of their dream irrespective of their differences.

Candido who spoke during activities to celebrate Nigeria’s independence on Sunday, said the people should look beyond tribal, religious or political affiliations and put on zeal of determination, of hope and patriotism which he said would be required to put the nation back on track from its road to destruction.

He said the nation has potentials but such great height can only be attained with unity and love.

He said with the sacrifice of our leaders, the unity of Nigeria cannot be compromised and urged all residents to consider their neighbours as their brothers or sisters.

He condemned hate speeches and sued for peace and unity saying that the love and unity that gave birth to Nigeria must be restored and sustained.

“The amalgamation of different ethnic groups years back into one Nigeria was a marriage born out of love and unity. This love and unity have bound us together as one nation.

“That is why the current preaching against hate speeches is imperative. Love songs must replace hate songs on the lips of all our people. Unity is our goal, loving one another as one Nigeria is ultimate,” he said.

Speaking earlier, the Head of Department Education/Social Development, Mrs Dinatu Tukura, said the chairman has chosen to celebrate this historic independence day of Nigeria at 57 even in the face of daunting economic challenges because of its significance.

Tukura said the celebration was to ensure that the labour of our heroes past did not go in vain.

The event, held in Apo, was attended by students of various schools in the area council.
