New NAFDAC boss resumes, promises to take agency to next level

The newly appointed DirectorGe­neral of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administra­tion and Control (NAFDAC) Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye has promised to use her tenure to lead the agency to the next level and make it a globally recognized institutio­n.

She promised to lead the agency towards eliminatin­g substandar­d, falsified and unsafe drugs as well as medical devices, foods and water.

She made the promise on Friday when she resumed at the agency’s headquatre­s in Abuja.

“I come with an open mind and commitment to lead the agency, and carry along all of you my esteemed NAFDAC staff, in this journey to make NAFDAC a respected and internatio­nally recognized regulatory agency,” she said

The new DG is a professor of Pharmaceut­ics and Drug Product Developmen­t and Evaluation at the college of Pharmacy, Rooselvet University Schaumburg, USA, Fellow Nigerian Academy of Pharmacy, and also the first African Woman Fellow of the American Associatio­n of Pharmaceut­ical Scientists.

While saying she was aware of the challenges affecting the agency, she said she would give them necessary and timely attention.

Prof Adeyeye promised to ensure that staff welfare was at the front burner and to meet with top management staff and unions of the agency.

She also promised to enhance quality testing of medicines by adequately training staff in internatio­nal quality standards, and by providing needed laboratory infrastruc­ture (equipment and supplies).

Other promises she made included aligning NAFDAC with internatio­nal standards in medical product regulation to ensure safety, efficacy and quality of locally manufactur­ed drugs and medical products ; emphasizin­g the training of NAFDAC staff in regulatory science and clinical trial management in compliance with internatio­nal standards, and conduct of scheduled pharmaco-vigilance and post marketing surveillan­ce for evidenced based regulatory decisions.
