Taraba win APC National Unity Cup
Taraba State contingent has won the first edition of the National Unity Football Championship organized by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The Taraba State team defeated Gombe State 5-3 in a penalty shootout after 90 minutes of a barren draw.
The tension-soaked encounter was watched by the Minister of the FCT, Mohammed Musa Bello, his Women Affairs counterpart, Aisha Alhassan and the members of the APC National Working Committee (NWC).
The national Chairman of the party, Chief John OdigieOyegun, presented the trophy to the winner of the maiden edition of the APC National Unity Championship.
The party’s National Youth Leader, Ibrahim Dasuki Jalo, whose office organised the tournament, said football competition was packaged to promote unity and keep the Nigerian youths busy through a worthwhile venture and bequeath a legacy.
Jalo said the participation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) controlled state was an indication to show the difference between sports and politics.
The APC Youth Leader, who voiced the plan to make the tournament an annual event, advised the Nigerian youths to embrace peace, unity, and progress to secure and guarantee their future.
He said the gain of the tournament was the opportunity “to achieve unity because young people came from different states to participate in the event”, saying “that is our target.”
“We will do our best, some of us that are here will encourage whoever that is coming after us to continue with this legacy.
“It is something that is happening for the first time in the history of political parties in Nigeria and I believe other parties will emulate what we have done and we keep praying and hoping that this kind of event continues,” he also said.
