WHO donates 853 motorcycles for disease surveillance
The World Health Organization (WHO) has donated 853 motorcycles to the Federal Government to strengthen disease surveillance across the country.
Country Director of WHO, Dr Wondimagegnehu Alemu presented the motorcycles and other related items to the Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole yesterday in Abuja. They are to be distributed to the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Dr Alemu said surveillance was key in disease control and eradication.
He said Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers (DSNOs) play a major role in surveillance at the field level through visits to communities and health facilities, and that they also facilitate timely investigation and response to outbreak of diseases.
He said it was in recognition of their role in disease control in rural communities that WHO in partnership with donor partners provided the motorcycles to enhance surveillance system in Nigeria.
Prof. Adewole thanked the World Health Organization for the donation adding that it signified that 2018 would be a good year for all Nigerians.
He said “when we are able to detect and respond appropriately, we would be able to curtail the spread of diseases and maintain good health across the nation”.
