Substandard tyres cause economic losses- SON
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has warned that substandard tyres cause economic losses when they result to accidents leading to destruction of goods and loss of human lives.
The SON, in collaboration with Sentigate Nigeria Limited, held a sensitisation workshop at the Tyre Plaza, Apo, Abuja, to increase the awareness on substandard tyres in Abuja.
In his goodwill message, the Director General of the Organisation, Osita Anthony Aboloma, urged the tyre dealers to be wary of substandard tyres as they pose a risk to human lives.
Represented at the event, the DG told tyre dealers to make money from their tyre business without risking human lives by adhering to standards.
Key risk factors identified included the need to look out for expiry date, worn out tyres and substandard imported tyres.
The SON sensitised the tyre dealers on the Organisation’s Standard Implementation NIS 252 of 2017 and the need for the dealers to adhere to the standard provisions.
Some of the tyre dealers who spoke to Daily Trust expressed joy at the sensitisation, adding that they were now better equipped with information on how to identify substandard tyres.
One of the dealers, Ikechukwu Uzo, said the dealers were conscious of the irreparable damage substandard tyres cause to vehicle owners and were doing their best to make sure that only quality tyres get to customers.
He said the best option for vehicle owners is to always buy new tyres and ensure that the tyres have not expired.
