We have been isolated, Kano female farmers cry out
The women wing of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Kano state chapter, has said that women are being excluded in various agricultural interventions and empowerment programmes, especially those anchored by the state government.
Kano state chairperson of AFAN, Hajiya Fatima Sharif, told journalists in Kano that female farmers in the state were left to fend for themselves without being included in the state government’s various empowerment programmes.
She noted that the farmers responded to the calls of the state and the federal governments to engage in self-reliant endeavours but met with disappointment.
“It is discouraging to see that after being courageous enough and our subsequent engagement in what is termed as male dominated profession, women farmers in Kano state are left out in most of the empowerment projects embarked upon by the government. The issue has reached an alarming rate that some women farmers are considering a change in their chosen practice. We have formed associations and also followed all the needed procedures and yet we are relegated to no place
The Nigeria Commodity Exchange should enlighten Nigerians, especially the farmers on its activities. Majority of the real farmers don’t even know if such a body still exists in the country. Thanks to Daily Trust for mentioning the agency. I also suggest that you partner with it for the enlightenment of the farmers.

Does Nigeria still have a commodity agency like the NCX (Nigeria Commodity Exchange)? Please let them tell us how they operate and how can ordinary farmers benefit from their service. in government priority list,” lamented Hajiya Fatima. They should not just be organising retreat for their staff.

On your story last week on strawberry, it is amazing that we can grow this nutritious fruit in Nigeria. Government should work closely with its farmers to develop the crop for full-blown packaging in the country.

You are right in your story on strawberry which you carried last week. I’m also a farmer but getting adequate water in the farm remains the main challenge for us. Government should help us, thank you Daily Trust.
