An Upper Area Court in Masaka, Nasarawa State, has sentenced a 35-year-old woman, Mrs Celina Maiwada, to six months in prison for pouring hot a locally made alcoholic drink on her neighbour.

burukutu, Mrs Maiwada, a widow, with four children, was sentenced to six months in jail after she pleaded guilty to causing grievous hurt to one Mr Iyok Yahaw.

The prosecutor, Francis Swem, had earlier told the court that the complainant, "One Mr Alexander Dogo of Angwan Gwandara, Masaka came to the divisional police command to report that while he and his brother were sitting at a local drinking spot at Angwa Jaba, the accused hit his brother Iyok Yahaw with a stick and when they confronted her she poured hot burukutu on him and as result he sustained first degree burns on his back."

He also said the hot drink splashed on two women, Lucy Kure and Hannah Iliyah, as a result of they too sustained injuries.

The magistrate,Yakubu Ishaku, however, gave the convict an option of N5,000 fine in lieu of the six months sentence. The police have arrested and began the investigation of eight suspects over the death of a herder in Kubwa, Abuja.

City News had reported last week that one Abubakar Umar was found dead after he was called out by unidentified persons.

The corpse was found in a bush across Kubwa-Zuba highway, two days after he went out and did not return home.

A resident of Ruga community in Kubwa, where the deceased had lived, told our reporter yesterday that the police arrested three relatives of the deceased in the community while they were there for condolence.

Four other kinsmen were arrested in Zuba town.

Our reporter learnt that while in detention, one of the suspects received a call from his son, who sounded as if he was privy to the killing of the herder and the police tracked and arrested him in Kaduna.

A source at Kubwa police division said the suspects were arrested and detained by the IGP’s Intelligence Respond Team (IRT) at the unit’s headquarters in Garki.

When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Kubwa, Ayobami Surajudeen, confirmed the development.
