PLASIEC postpones Plateau’s LG elections

- From Lami Sadiq, Jos

The Plateau State Independent Election Commission (PLASIEC) yesterday postponed the local government elections in the state slated for February 17.

Daily Trust reports that speculations about the postponement had been rife but PLASIEC Chairman, Fabian Ntung, yesterday, said at a press conference that the postponement followed a communication it received from the State Security Council which advised that the present security atmosphere in the state was not conducive for the LG polls.

Ntung said, “In line with the foregoing advise, the commission wishes to inform the general public, especially stakeholders in the political process in the state, that the local government council election in the state which was earlier scheduled for Saturday, 17th February 2018 is hereby postponed until further notice.”

While taking press men round to see some of the already purchased election materials, he said the commission had been well prepared and fully mobilised towards the conduct of the election on the earlier scheduled date.

“As soon as the commission is again advised of the conducive nature of the security atmosphere in the state, a new date for the election will be announced and the general public will be duly informed.”

But the Plateau State chapter of the PDP has described the postponement as laughable and unfortunate.

The state chairman of the party, Mr Damishi Sango, stated this yesterday while addressing the press at the state secretariat of the party.

The PDP said it found the excuse given by the state electoral commission to postpone the election as not only laughable but unfortunate, noting that Governor Simon Lalong had boasted before President Muhammadu Buhari that the state had been enjoying peace.
