‘My husband is an unrepentant liar’

A mother of two, Oyelola Alade, has told a Grade C customary court sitting at Oja Oba, Mapo, Ibadan, that she has decided to divorce her husband, Opeyemi Alade, because he is an unrepentant pathological liar.

Oyelola alleged that Opeyemi, besides being a liar, was also using using charms and engaging in dubious activities.

She said, “My husband is an unrepentant pathological liar. Since I met him, he has told me many lies, even when I knew the truth. I left his house in Lagos three years ago when he told me that he wanted to do some rituals for our first child.

“I thought he would tell me details of the rituals but he declared he would not. Now that many things such as female genital mutilation, money rituals and other social vices are rampant, I decided to take the baby away so that they won’t destroy her life for me.

“Though he has never beaten me, we usually engaged in hot arguments and quarrels. Please separate us.”

Alade admitted he Oyelola about the ritual first child must undergo.

“I am a Yoruba man and I believe in our culture and tradition. It is true that my daughter must undergo some rituals at the age of three.

She knows that I was using charms before we married. I wonder why this is coming out now. I gave her some substances during pregnancy. I, too, don’t love her again,” Alade said.

During cross-examination, Oyelola, said it was true Alade used to give her some black substances during pregnancy, but she was always flushing them away in the toilet.

The president of the court, Chief Ademola Odunade, held that with the evidence before the court, it was obvious there was no more love between the couple.

Chief Odunade ruled, “Having considered the evidence given by both parties, the court has granted dissolution of the marriage forthwith.

The custody of the two children in the marriage is hereby granted to the plaintiff.”

He ordered the defendant to pay Oyelola the sum of N8,000 monthly as feeding allowance for the children. told their
