- From Usman A. Bello, Benin

The Benin Zonal Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has arrested a 26-year-old suspected human trafficker, Uyi Osawanuyi.

It was gathered that the suspect recruited four victims (three females and a male) from Benin in January and promised to take them to Europe.

It was further learnt that one of the victims was four months pregnant for the suspect, and that he still forced her to make money for him through prostitution.

NAPTIP’s Zonal Commander, Nduka Nwanwenne, in a statement yesterday, said the suspect took the victims to Niger Republic, sold one of the girls to a ‘madam’ and demanded various sums of money from them after introducing them to a club.

“One of the victims escaped and reported the matter to the police in Niger Republic, and two of his accomplices were arrested, prosecuted and sentenced to eight years imprisonment after the victims testified against them,” Nwanwenne said, adding that the victims were rescued with the help of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

“The suspect, who had earlier stayed in Morocco for four years, tested positive to HIV virus and he is currently accessing anti-retroviral drugs, yet he dated the victim who is pregnant without caution,” he said

Nwanwenne said during interrogation that the suspected trafficker claimed that the pregnant victim didn’t want condom. He said the suspect would be charged to court soon.
