The Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST) Wudil gave its students until work closing hours yesterday to vacate the campus following a violent demonstration by the students after the death of a 300-level colleague in River Wudil.

Faruk Abubakar who was a student of Biology Education, drowned on Wednesday when he and two other students went to the river for a swim.

Students went on rampage Wednesday night, destroying windshields of university vehicles and cash machines belonging to commercial banks operating on campus over what they described as foot-dragging in mobilizing rescue team in respect of the drowned student.

Addressing the press yesterday, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Shehu A. Musa, said however that the closure of the institution was not exactly connected to demonstration.

He said the university Senate decided on the closure for students to proceed on midsemester break after two days of mourning in respect of the drowned student.

The circular stated, “The university Senate has declared Thursday and Friday, 3rd and the students’ 4th May, 2018 as non-lecture days in respect of Faruk Abubakar who was drowned in River Wudil yesterday (Wednesday). Furthermore the mid-semester break begins on Monday 7th May, to Friday, 18th May, 2018. Students are expected to quietly vacate the campus before closing hour of today,” the circular said.
