…APC exco compromised in Rivers — Abe

- From Victor Edozie, Port Harcourt

Ahead of Saturday’s ward congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a governorship aspirant in Rivers State, Sen. Magnus Abe, has alleged that the executive committee of the party in the state has been infiltrated by non-members, saying the development violates the party’s constitution.

Senator Abe, who spoke to Daily Trust in Port Harcourt, advised the leadership of the party to shelve plans to subvert the will of members during the congress.

Abe, who represents Rivers SouthEast at the National Assembly, expressed fear over perceived plans by some persons to manipulate the result of the congress where delegates from the ward level would emerge.

He said: “This afternoon we had a meeting of the State Executive Committee of the party. The meeting started with few challenges in my view because the exco is a body provided by the constitution of the party.

“Many of the persons who attended the meeting were co-opted into the meeting and they were not members of the State Executive Committee; many members expressed shock over the development. We are trying to advise the party to avoid any situation that will make members of the party unable to elect people that will manage the affairs of their party,” he said.

The state chairman of APC, Dr. Davis Ikanya, said the party would be transparent in the conduct of the ward congresses.
