Ekiti gov’ship primary: APC may disqualify erring aspirants
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is expected to announce its final decision on the botched governorship primary election in Ekiti State today.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, who fielded questions from journalists, said the National Working Committee (NWC) would consider both oral and written reports provided by the chairman of the Primary Election Committee, Governor Umaru Tanko AlMakura of Nasarawa State later last night.
Abdullahi, who said the committee in its report submitted yesterday by Al-Makura made specific recommendations which gave the NWC a couple of options on how to proceed, stressed that the individuals that took part in the disruption of the exercise and the persons they represented had been identified.
He said the party would not hesitate to disqualify their principals and prosecute them accordingly if they were found culpable after the NWC meeting.
He added that since there was nothing available to the party leadership which suggested that the current committee conducting the primary was incapable of carrying out the assignment, the party had no reason to reconstitute the team.
“It is unlikely to happen. Don’t forget that we have only one week to submit a candidate’s name to INEC. So, we don’t have sufficient time to begin to set up a new committee,” Abdullahi added.
On the fate of the ballots cast for the concluded five local government areas, the APC spokesman said the issue and the reports from the aspirants would be considered at the meeting before the final decision would be announced.
On the reports of the ward congresses that had been trailed by controversies, the APC spokesman said the NWC would take decision after receiving the various reports of the election and appeal committees sent for the exercise.
