Transport union leader commits suicide in Ondo
A middle-aged man simply identified as Ayokunle said to be one of the leaders of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) in Ondo town has committed suicide through the consumption of a substance suspected to be poison.
Sources also said that the deceased, a father of four, owned a commercial vehicle with which he was plying the Ondo/Akure road.
He was said to have obtained a short term loan not too long ago from a cooperative society but was unable to pay back.
This development, sources close to the family said, generated argument and disagreements between the deceased and the operators of the cooperative society.
A source said the deceased was last seen on Friday night, hale and healthy, before going to bed.
He was said to have swallowed the substance with a cup of water and was found dead in the morning.
Although, no suicide note was left behind, the deceased, according to sources, may have committed suicide because of the debt.
When journalists visited the house of the deceased located at Oke-Ibukun in Ondo city few hours after the news of his death, members of his family were seen holding meetings on what next to do and how to bury him.
Contacted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Yaba divisional police station, Mr. Kolawole Boluwaji, a Superintendent of Police ( SP), said information concerning the incident was yet to be reported at the station, but promised to investigate the matter.
