Se­nate probes OAU sex for mark scan­dal

The Se­nate yes­ter­day com­menced in­ves­ti­ga­tion into the sex for mark scan­dal in­volv­ing Mon­ica Osagie and Pro­fes­sor Richard Akindele at the Obafemi Awolowo Univer­sity (OAU) Ife.

The probe is to be jointly con­ducted by the com­mit­tees on In­sti­tu­tions and Hu­man Rights mat­ters.

The probe fol­lowed a mo­tion by Sen­a­tor Bio­dun Olu­jimi (PDP, Ek­iti).

Prof Osagie was re­cently al­leged to have de­manded for sex from Osagie to in­crease her Se­nate Ter­tiary Ju­di­ciary, and Le­gal grades.

Olu­jimi said the case “De­serves greater scru­tiny and at­ten­tion as it sign­posts on how se­ri­ous we are as a na­tion to fully and ex­haus­tively elim­i­nate this per­ver­sion from our schools.”

The Se­nate also re­solved to in­vite the OAU au­thor­i­ties to ex­plain steps so far taken and the out­come of the in­ter­nal in­ves­ti­ga­tion on the mat­ter.

Se­nate Pres­i­dent Bukola Saraki said any mem­ber of the Univer­sity found want­ing must be pun­ished.

Se­nate also passed a res­o­lu­tion urg­ing the Le­gal Aid Coun­cil to step up ef­forts to en­sure that mi­nors in pris­ons were not pros­e­cuted with­out le­gal rep­re­sen­ta­tion.
