APC suspends Gombe assembly minority leader

Daily Trust - - POLITICS - From Haruna Gimba Yaya, Gombe

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Gombe State has announced the suspension of the Minority Leader of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Haruna.

The Zonal Vice Chairman of the party, Mr. Julius Ishaya, disclosed this while addressing newsmen yesterday at the party secretariat.

Our correspondent reports that the lawmaker’s suspension followed a recent failed attempt by four of the eight members of the party in the assembly to impeach him after he granted a press conference denouncing the recent congresses of the party.

Ishaya said the lawmaker was suspended for six months after he was allegedly found guilty of violating the party’s constitution by claiming that the recent congresses of the party were not held.

The party stalwart said they viewed the minority leader’s action as antiparty and embarrassing, which he said had brought the Gombe APC into contempt and ridicule.

When contacted, the embattled Ahmed Haruna told newsmen that the party leadership could suspend him but that it lacked the powers to remove him as minority leader.

He said only members of his party in the assembly had the power to remove him through a vote on the floor of the house.
