- From Usman A. Bello, Benin

The Police in Edo State have arrested one Iyen Igiebor for allegedly attacking his wife and mother-in-law in the state.

The suspect, who was said to have been repatriated after unsuccessful stay abroad, was alleged to have moved into his in-law’s house after failing to secure his own accommodation.

It was gathered that an argument ensued between the couple due to the alleged refusal of the wife to accompany him to the place where the suspect claimed to have found an apartment for rent.

It was further gathered that the disagreement resulted in a separation between them.

Igiebor, angered by the development later attacked the wife with a machete while on her way from the market, leaving her with a deep cut on her arm, a source said.

The source said the motherin-law also sustained a cuts in the head and face. They were rescued by a neighbour who heard their cries.

“The woman and her mother were coming back from the market at night, at about 9pm, and did not know the man was waiting for them. He wanted to cut off the woman’s head but she defended herself with her hand and sustained a cut. He also injured his mother-inlaw,” the source said.

The suspect is said to have been arrested by operatives of the Aduwawa police station.

When contacted, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, said he would get back to our reporter on the issue but could before going to press.
