Senators grill NSA over insecurity

- By Ismail Mudashir

Senators yesterday held a meeting with the National Security Adviser, General Babagana Monguno (rtd) over proliferation of firearms, killings and kidnapping across the country.

The meeting of the NSA came a week after the lawmakers grilled security chiefs led by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin on same matter.

Monguno was grilled for over two hours during a closed door session presided by Senate President Bukola Saraki.

At the end of the session, Saraki said the NSA answered questions from on security - insurgency, terrorism, kidnapping, coordination of the security agencies and the general killings in the country.

“Thereafter, we directed that he submits a funding request similar to other heads of security agencies that had come before us and to submit consideration where relevant amendments to existing laws involving security agencies need consideration,” he said.

Meanwhile, Senator Kabiru Marafa (APC, Zamfara) yesterday told the Senate that bandits killed 82 persons between last Friday and Wednesday in three local government areas of Zamfara state.

“These are humans and not cockroaches that are being killed every day in Zamfara State. The 82 people that were killed left behind 101 wives and 240 orphans,” he said.

Saraki said he would lead a Senate delegation to Zamfara State to take closer look at the situation in the State.
