Experts harp on need to promote entrepreneurship

- By Victoria Onehi

The Federal Government has been urged to expose young people to entrepreneurship training rather than solely university education.

The call was made by one of the speakers at a conference tagged, ‘From Enduring to Enjoying (FREE)’ in Abuja last weekend.

A facilitator and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Protection Plus Security Services, Ubong King, said government should create platforms where young people could acquire entrepreneurial skills rather than education.

“Our university training teaches people to be dependent and look for jobs. Let’s change that; lets teach people how to start their own businesses,” he said.

He said government could establish an entrepreneurship platform to achieve this purpose.

The convener of the FREE conference, Mr. Jimi Tewe, said the conference was organised to help solve the problem of unemployment and under-employment in the country.

“We want only to university see the desired change we need in our country, especially as it has to do with underemployment and finding fulfilment in the jobs you do,” Tewe said.

Another facilitator and Principal Consultant, LYD Consulting, Mr. Bankole Williams, said for anybody to enjoy a quantum leap in any career, they must enjoy what they did. “You feel a sense of meaning doing what you love,” he said.

A fashion entrepreneur, Olori Yinka Ajayi, urged young people to seek knowledge as knowledge was the new currency.
