Kebbi LG cashier in police net over missing salaries

A cashier in Gwandu Local Government Area of Kebbi State has been arrested by the police over N9 million workers’ salaries he claimed was snatched from him by armed robbers at his house.

The stolen money was budgeted for the payment of the April salaries of workers in the health and agricultur­e department­s of the local government.

The chairman of the council, Alhaji Shehu Bagudu, told our correspond­ent in Gwandu on Thursday that the cashier, Alhaji Bashir Gwandu, claimed the money was snatched from him on May 24, 2018 at the gate of his house as he was driving into his compound.

He said: “When the cashier collected the money from the bank he took it home and as he was about to open the gate of his house, unknown to him thieves had been tailing him from the bank and they snatched the money from him.

“The suspects, laid ambush for who him, had drove his car and the money away. The car was later discovered in Tambuwal area of Sokoto.”

Bagudu also dispelled rumours that he was shielding the cashier because he is an inlaw to him, saying he could not stop the police from doing their investigat­ion.

“I have not slept ever since this incident happened. The boy is my son in-law ever since before I became the chairman of the council and he is known to be a trustworth­y man in the council,” he said.
