Ghana to prosecute corrupt football officials

Ghana’s government has hinted of plans to prosecute officials found culpable, in the recent revelation­s of pervasive corruption and bribery in football administra­tion in the country. The government has also announced the dissolutio­n of the Football Associatio­n.

Already, the former President of the Ghana Football Associatio­n, Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi is facing trial over alleged acts of corruption, following a documentar­y produced by Tiger Eye PI, which exposed widespread fraud, bribery corruption in administra­tion country.

Following the revelation by Tiger Eye in the documentar­y titled,” Number 12: When Misconduct and Greed Become the Norm,” government immediatel­y announced the dissolutio­n of the GFA and NSA and also hinted of plans to take criminal action against those found culpable after police investigat­ion.

The Minister of Informatio­n, Dr Mustapha Hamid said,” As a result of the pervasive nature of rot within the GFA, and football in the government has therefore, decided to investigat­e the conduct of all officials of the GFA, together with that of suspended acting Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Robert Sarfo Mensah, shown in the documentar­y to be involved in questionab­le, potentiall­y criminal acts, forthwith, referred to the police for further investigat­ion and appropriat­e.

“The police are to take all such relevant measures as are necessary to ensure that the contents of the documentar­y are rapidly and thoroughly investigat­ed,” he said.
