FG hasn’t abandoned East West road says minister

- By Chris Agabi

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Usani Uguru Usani has said the federal government hasn’t abandoned the East West road as being speculated in some sections of the media.

The minister also said the road still under construction has advanced significantly with several sections completed but the entire project should be completed when the balance of the contract sum is paid the contractor.

The East West road under construction for about 12 years now commenced from Warri Delta state, and passed through, Bayelsa State, Rivers State, Akwa Ibom state and terminates at Calabar, in Cross River state.

Mr. Usani who spoke during an inspection of the project however noted that some sections of the road haven’t been done according to specifications even as he said the contractors would be made to correct all noticeable defects.

He also told the project consultants to always get the best deal for the government on the contract.

He chided the consultants for not doing due diligence in ensuring all the contractors are adhering to the terms of the contract.

“For the areas that are not completed, we expect that when contractors return to site, they would work on the growing grasses along the road but for the sections that we have taken over, it is a matter of maintenance to be our responsibility” he said.
