NBS, SMEDAN to conduct second national survey on MSMEs
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) have concluded plans to conduct the second nationwide survey on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Nigeria.
Speaking at the inception workshop for the national MSMEs survey held yesterday in Abuja, the Director General of SMEDAN, Dr. Dikko Umar, said the survey is a follow up to the last one conducted in 2013 and released in 2014.
Dikko, represented by Mr. Wale Faseye, said the second survey is necessary considering concerns of enterprise mortality and mobility peculiar to the MSMEs sub-sector of the economy.
The MSMEs survey released in 2014 showed that Nigeria had 37.07 million enterprises that employed 59.74 million persons and contributed 48.47 per cent or N38.78 trillion to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The SMEDAN boss said the new survey is meant to update the existing data on MSMEs in the country, identifying their contribution to GDP, challenges, skills gap, mortality and growth.
The Statistician General of the Federation, Dr. Yemi Kale, said the collaboration with SMEDAN on the MSMEs is in line with NBS’ determination of producing data on all facets of the Nigerian economy by collaborating with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the government.
He said the survey is aimed at producing dependable data on MSMEs that will be used for determining the availability of MSMEs in the country and for planning purpose as well.
He said MSMEs are important in the transmission of agriculture to industrialisation, which ultimately boosts the economy.
