EFCC: We are not targeting opposition

- From Usman A. Bello (Benin) & Haruna Gimba Yaya (Gombe)

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has dispelled speculations that it is targeting the opposition.

Acting EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Magustated this yesterday during the African Anti-Corruption day in Benin, Edo State. He was represented by the head of the zonal office in Benin, Yakubu Malafia.

“We are not targeting opposition what they should ask us is whether the person committed any offence, if he has not, then we are targeting opposition but where the person has committed the offence, we are not targeting opposition. When PDP was in government, they said they are targeting opposition and now APC is also targeting opposition. EFCC is a Ngeria institution, so we are not politically motivated and we are not used by anybody,” he said.

According to him, Nigeria is one of the most extensive and deeply entrenched cultures of corruption on the African continent.

“This manifest in the increasingly large number of corrupt related investigations, litigations, convictions and recoveries made by the commission since 2003.

“The depth and gravity of corruption in the country can be seen in the fact that between January and July 2018 alone, the EFCC has secured 142 convictions including Reverend Jolly Nyame and Chief Joshua Dariye, former governors of Plateau and Taraba state respectively.

Magu, at a similar event in Gombe yesterday, said the EFCC had traced and recovered illicit funds as well as property worth billions of dollars.
