The suspect, who hails from Abi LGA of the state, was said to have returned home with a pistol at about 8.30pm when he shot Victoria Ekpe at her residence, No. 11, Joseph Mkpa Street, Ikot Ansa Community in Calabar Municipal.

A witness, Elizabeth Bassey, said, “Nkanu came home drunk from a party and when asked why he always returns home drunk, he brought out pistol from his pocket and pointed at me but sensing danger I ran but my late cousin was shot.

“The policeman came back from an outing and our mummy was also outside, Mma (the daughter of the deceased) asked him what he brought from his outing, he told her he did not come home with anything, he left Mma and came to the passage where I was standing, I asked him why he always gets drunk anytime he goes out.

“Immediately, he turned and brought out a pistol from his pocket, cocked it and pointed it at me saying, ‘this is what I brought from the party’. I got scared and ran.

“He turned the gun to my cousin’s direction and shot her on the neck. She did not know what we were discussing as she was on the phone when he shot her,” Bassey said.

Reacting, Cross River State police spokesperson, Irene Igbo, said the culprit would be arraigned, adding that he would have to explain where he got the gun from.
