76 sen­a­tors spon­sor bill on state po­lice

A bill seek­ing to amend the 1999 Con­sti­tu­tion to pro­vide for state po­lice was in­tro­duced for first read­ing on the floor of the Se­nate yes­ter­day.

A to­tal of 76 sen­a­tors led by Deputy Se­nate Pres­i­dent Ike Ek­w­ere­madu spon­sored the bill.

It was ti­tled ‘Con­sti­tu­tion of the Fed­eral Repub­lic of Nige­ria (al­ter­ation) Bill, 2018 (SB. 694).’

Ek­w­ere­madu had on Tues­day an­nounced that the bill would come up yes­ter­day as part of a fresh amend­ment to the 1999 Con­sti­tu­tion with a view to estab­lish­ing state po­lice.

Both the Se­nate and the House of Rep­re­sen­ta­tives had last week agreed to re­visit the is­sue of state po­lice fol­low­ing the spate killings in the coun­try.

Al­ready, the bill was in­tro­duced in the House spon­sored by House Leader Femi Gba­jabi­amila.
