Bandits kidnap 2 customs officers in Zamfara

- From Shehu Umar, Gusau

Suspected armed bandits Saturday kidnapped two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service at a checkpoint at Farun Jaja village along the Zamfara- Katsina boarder in Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

A witness, simply identified as Rabiu, told Daily Trust yesterday that four armed men arrived at the checkpoint, fired gunshots in the air and asked everyone to lie down.

“They thereafter seized our telephones and asked the two officers including one Abdullahi to go with them. They then asked for one officer called Sarkin Mallamai and the Officer -In-Charge and we all told them that they were at the nearby Gurbin Baure town.

“They then began to fire shots into a primary school nearby where some other people were sleeping inside. Luckily for the people in the classes no body stood up as such no one was killed. We later discovered at least 46 bullets around the place. The gunmen later went northwards and disappeared in to a sorghum plantation with the officers,” Rabiu said.

The customs authorities in the state could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report, but the spokesman for the operation Sharan Daji in the state, Major C K Abiade, said they got the information of the incident, but were yet to confirm it.

The spokesman of the state police command, SP Muhammad Shehu, asked our reporter to inquire from the customs office.
