FG ex­pends N250bn on school feed­ing, N-Power, oth­ers

The Fed­eral Govern­ment has ex­pended N250 bil­lion on school feed­ing pro­gramme, con­di­tional cash trans­fer, N-Power and Govern­ment En­ter­prise and Em­pow­er­ment Pro­gramme (GEEP) since the in­cep­tion of its So­cial In­vest­ment Pro­gramme in 2016.

The Spe­cial Ad­viser to the Pres­i­dent on So­cial In­vest­ment Pro­grammes, Maryam Uwais, dis­closed this yes­ter­day in Abuja.

She said the fed­eral govern­ment is now feed­ing over 9,300,892 chil­dren in 49,837 govern­ment schools in 26 States.

Uwais said the Home Grown Feed­ing Pro­gramme cur­rently go­ing on in pub­lic schools re­quires 6.8mil­lion eggs, 594 cat­tle and 83 met­ric tons of fish to be sup­plied to the cooks for the feed­ing of the chil­dren weekly.

She fur­ther said there is also a boost in the pro­duc­tion and sup­ply of rice, wheat, soya beans, or­ange -flesh po­ta­toes, fruit and veg­etable farm­ers.

She said the pro­gramme is also aimed at em­pow­er­ing com­mu­ni­ties has seen to the en­gage­ment of 96, 972 cooks with over a 100,000 small scale farm­ers be­ing part of the value chain sup­ply­ing the lo­cally sourced in­gre­di­ents.
