Gunmen kill 2 persons at PDP rally in Rivers

- From Victor Edozie, Port Harcourt

Gunmen Wednesday in Ipo, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State opened fire on People’s Democratic Party’s members, killing two persons and injuring scores of others during the party’s voters sensitization programme.

The chairman of the local government, Samuel Nwanosike, escaped death by the whisker.

The victims were one Unche and Nnana and a woman whose identity could not be ascertained at the time of filing the report.

It was gathered that, when the gunmen stormed the venue of the programme, they targeted the council boss.

An eye witness said the attack was carried out by a deadly cult group led by one Kenjika Jonathan, also known as School Boy.

Jonathan was said to have been on the wanted list of the state government and had earlier warned the council boss and the PDP against holding any campaign in his (Ipo) community.

The spokesman of the state police command, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the story, but said he was not aware of any casualty.

Meanwhile, the PDP in the state has accused some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress of plotting to assassinate council chairman.

Its publicity secretary, Darlington Orji, in a statement yesterday, called on security agencies to investigate and arrest the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

Reacting, APC Publicity Secretary Chris Finebone, dismissed the accusation, wondering why had not reported any suspect to the security agencies for arrest and investigation. the
