We’ve started impounding cars with old number plate – DRTS

- By Abubakar Sadiq Isah

The FCT Director of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), Wadata Aliyu Bodinga, said the directorate has commenced clamping down on vehicles with old number plate and those without valid particulars.

Bodinga, who spoke with our reporter on Tuesday in Abuja, however, said any vehicle with genuine and valid particulars but with old number plate would not be impounded.

He said motorists who engaged in other offences, including improper documentation and driving rickety vehicles, would also be apprehended.

He said the move was aimed at ensuring that vehicles plying Abuja roads were road worthy, especially as 2018 came to an end, noting that a recent court ruling obtained by FRSC empowered the officers to arrest vehicles with old number plate.

He further said DRTS had stopped renewal of particulars for vehicles that still had the old number plate in order to encourage motorists to key into the new number plate project.

“One thing with the old number plate is that data is not captured on the national data bank. And when you drive with an old number plate, you cannot be captured in the national vehicle administration data bank,” he added.

Bodinga said with the new number plate, DRTS would easily capture the data of owners of vehicles.
