FG to introduce medical physics in tertiary institutions

The federal government will soon introduce medical physics in all tertiary institutions, Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole has said.

He said this at the weekend in Abuja during a conference organized by the National Association of Medical Physicists (NAMP).

The minister said medical physicists are very important in cancer care and treatment.

Prof Adewole said the federal government was also working to sustain the medical physicists’ residency programme as well as including it into the health care system by establishing a bill to regulate its practice.

President of the National Association of Medical Physicists (NAMP) NAMP, Prof. Moses Adebayo Aweda, said the theme of the conference “Medical physics for patient benefit” was chosen to address the need of getting more professionals into medical physics especially in the aspect of patient’s treatment.

He called on the federal government to bring more individuals especially women into the medical physics field to address shortage of women in the profession.

Prof. Aweda also said the launching of the journal on medical physics will aid treatment of cancer and also develop an evidence based research platform for its members.

Founder of Medicaid Cancer Foundation and first lady of Kebbi State, Dr Zainab Shinkafi-said there were inadequate personnel in the field of medical physics in Nigeria and the continent, adding that introducing it in tertiary institutions will improve the profession.
