Lagos police dispel rumour of terror attack at MMIA

- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

The Lagos State police command has dispelled a rumour of a terror attack at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), saying there was no truth in it.

The news of a planned attack at the airport had gone viral on the social media on Saturday, creating tension among travellers.

But the State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, yesterday dismissed the report, saying that it was the handiwork of mischief makers whose aim was to destabilise the peace in the metropolis.

Edgal, who spoke through the command’s Public Relations Officer, Chike Oti, said, “The attention of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command has been drawn to a video trending on the social media claming that the MMIA is under attack by terrorists.

“In view of the disturbing video, the authorities of the Lagos State Police Command contacted the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations at the Airport Command and he stated that the video was that of a simulation exercise carried out by the Nigerian Airforce, in conjuction with other agencies at the airport three years ago.

“The command wishes to assure members of the public that MMIA is safe and secure and not under any form attack as wickedly portrayed by those behind the rumour.”

Oti said that already, Edgal had directed the command’s Intelligence Unit to unmask the persons behind the rumour for prosecution.
