The club Captain, Mr Olumide Oyediran who was represented by the assistant club captain, Rtd Colonel Ade Sumonu commended Daily Trust for organising the event in honor of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Sumonu said choosing Ibadan golf club as the host of the tournament in the Southwest region was commendable, adding that the coming together of golfers from the six states was a symbol of unity.

“We thank Daily Trust for choosing Ibadan golf club as the venue of this tournament. You have made our weekend. For the past two days, our health status have been improved. However, we are expressing some disappointment on the part of the members of this club. Disappointment in the sense that when we saw the poster, we were excited because we were expecting something bigger than this. Daily Trust is a big national newspaper organisation and we expected good reception from the club.

“Ibadan golf club has a tradition and we don’t compromise our standard. We accepted the offer to host the tournament to prove that we are not arrogant. We promise to do better when else you call on us for such a programme. I appreciate all the golfers from other part of the Southwest states and our members here also. Your presence is a sign of respect for us in Ibadan golf club. The tournament could have been more celebrated than this but many of our members in Ikeja and Abeokuta golf club are in Gambia on golf tour. I thank you all,” he said.

The winner, Segun Emmanuel said he was ready to play in the finals in Abuja, and promised to maintain the winning spirit before during and after the tournament. The lady captain of Ogbomoso Golf Club, Mrs. Sade Ajala yesterday urged the Federal Government to recognize golf as one of the top sporting activities in the country.

She said that if golf which is rated as the best sport in the world could be given recognition in Nigeria, it will serve as a means of generating money for the country.

Ajala described golf as a game of life which has to be recognized.

The woman gofer stated this in an interview with Daily Trust during a golf tournament organised by the Media Trust, the publisher of the Daily Trust newspapers in honor of President Muhammadu Buhari.

She described the tournament as a wonderful experience and a welcome development for unity in the region.

According to her, organising a golf tournament in the name of President Buhari is commendable and well appreciated.

She said: “I mean celebrating President Buhari with golf is great. Starting from the tee-off yesterday till the end of the programme today, the experience was awesome.

“Golf is a game of life. Up till now, I don’t know why federal government has not been able to recognize golf like other sports. I think with this tournament, the federal government will be encouraged. Golf is a good game. It is a game of dignitaries.”
