A football enthusiast and a Canadabased Nigerian, Mr Cyril Obasi, has expressed joy that his son, Osinakachi Obasi has pledged his future to Nigeria.

The ex-banker, who is currently in Nigeria with the 16 year old Osinakachi to participate in the ongoing trials for Golden Eaglets in Abuja, said it has always been his desire to have one of his children represent Nigeria in any of the country’s national teams.

He told reporters that his son, who has received offers to play for other countries like Canada and Panama, is now ready to pledge his future to his fatherland -Nigeria.

He revealed that, besides his son’s decision to play for his country of birth, he prefers Nigeria ahead of the other countries because of Nigeria’s status and influence in global football.

The 16 year old, who plays as striker, emerged highest goals scorer for four years with two different clubs in Canada.

“I have been following Nigerian sports, particularly football and it has always been my desire that my son should play for Nigerian national football teams. As a result of that I encourage him (his son) to start playing football at the age of four years.

“He is here to take part in the ongoing U-17 trials in Abuja, and I am sure he will be considered by the coaches because of his quality. He will be of tremendous assistance to the Nigerian team if selected,” Obasi said

Also speaking, Osinakachi, who identified Austin Okocha and Kanu Nwankwo as his idols, said if picked by the coaches, Nigerians should expect goals from him whenever the country is playing an international match.

“I have the qualities to reach the level of Okocha and Kanu. I am fast, strong and I have speed needed of a striker,” he said.
