Two arrested for impersonating customs to defraud orphanages
Two persons are being held by the Nigeria Customs Service for allegedly posing as officers of the service to defraud orphanages of millions or naira and goods.
The identities of the impostors could not he ascertained as at press time, but it was reliably gathered that the suspects were picked up by operatives of the service at Seme.
It was also learnt that the suspects are members of a syndicate that goes to orphanages on the pretext that they were representing the Nigeria Customs Service to scout for orphanage homes that would benefit from the ongoing donation of bags of rice, vegetable oil, clothes and shoes by the Federal Government.
The National Public Relations Officer of the customs, Joseph Attah, told journalists that the service got an intelligence report that some unscrupulous individuals had cashed in on the good gesture of government to swindle unsuspecting members of the public of their hard earned money.
He said: “We have discovered that this man and a woman have been going about collecting documents from orphanages, pretending to be working for Customs. Their intention is clear, though there has not been any extortion yet.
“We have been able to nip this issue in the bud, as we apprehended and detained the suspects at Seme immediately”.
