Why Women came out in large number to vote in Kebbi

Last Saturday women in various communitie­s of Kebbi State came out in large numbers to exercise their franchise in the Presidenti­al and National Assembly elections. It was the first time women were coming out in large number to vote their preferred candidates in the state.

Our correspond­ent, who monitored the exercise around the state reports that a large number of women were seen converged at various polling units as early as 7:30 am to exercise their franchise.

At each of the wards and polling units our correspond­ent visited on the day of the election in Birnin Kebbi women were seen queuing up in orderly manner and waiting patiently to vote.

There was also a large turnout of women voters in Augie.

Excited by the large turnout of women in the election the Commission­er for Justice and Attorney General of Kebbi State, Ramatu Adamu Gulma while speaking to journalist­s said it was a good thing to see women in the state coming out to vote.

She said: “This is really exciting and we can attribute their large turnout to the massive campaign and sensitizat­ion we embarked on in the state to bring out the women to vote in the elections.

“We have gone from house to house in the towns and villages. You can see today that the polling units are filled with crowd and if you observe we have large number of women coming out to vote. This was made possible because of our efforts. We visited them in their various houses, we sat down with them and ate with them. The result of our efforts is what we are seeing today.”

A male voter, Muhammed Augie told our correspond­ent that he was surprised at the large number of women who cameo ut to vote.

“The election has no doubt witnessed a large turnout of women. This is the first time I am seeing women in their numbers coming out to vote. It is indeed a good developmen­t and I think our democracy is growing.” He said.

The Publicity Secretary of the APC in Kebbi State, Alhaji Sani Dododo told journalist­s that women for the first time came out in large number in the state.

He said the turnout was as a result of the massive campaign by the party on the need for women to be involved in politics. “Their large turnout was the result of our campaign and the effort made to reach them in their respective houses”.
