Senate presidency: Forum drums support for Lawan

- By Musa Abdullahi Krishi

The National Interest Progressive Forum (NIPF) has called on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to support the candidacy of Senator Ahmed Lawan, representing Yobe North as Senate president of the 9th Senate.

In a statement, yesterday, jointly signed by chairman of the forum, Alhaji Ibrahim Sadiq Taura and secretary, Mr Clement Ojima, the forum said the call became imperative as the APC needed to ensure a stable 9th National Assembly to achieve the objectives contained in its Next Level agenda.

The statement said “the APC should not allow another four years of rebellion in a National Assembly that it has comfortable majority. To ensure that the legislature works harmoniously with other arms of government, it is a must for APC to put its house together by allowing only its loyal members emerge as leaders of the two chambers of the National Assembly.”

The forum, while extoling Senator Lawan said, “His loyalty is not in doubt because he always respects the position of the party on all issues. He is a thorough bred politician and an excellent lawmaker. We call on the leadership of APC to encourage senators-elect to support Lawan as the next Senate president.”

The forum also called on President Muhammadu Buhari as leader of the party to ensure that competence, experience and absolute party loyalty were considered in the process of choosing the Senate president and Speaker of the House of Representatives.
