NUC approves varsity of agric, environmental Sciences for Imo
The Federal Government has given the recognition for the establishment of University of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Umuagwo, Imo State as the second state university in the state.
The Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC) Prof Abubakar Adamu Rasheed yesterday at the presentation of the letter to Governor Rochas Okorocha in Abuja said the University of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, will be the 49th state owned university and 171th university in the country,
Prof Rasheed said the university is recognized having met all the necessary requirement for the establishment of a public university and pledges its support to the varsity.
While agreeing with the governor on the need to be more creative in moving education forward in the country, NUC boss advised they follow all technical advice by the commission on the establishment and funding of the institution.
Earlier, Governor Okorocha said the need for more universities has become imperative going by large number of students who are unable to get admission into the universities.
While noting that admission will state in June, he said plans are underway for more universities in the state and that now he has over 500, 000 admission seekers and don’t know where to take them.
The governor said the new university is a specialized institution that will enable people to be self-employed.
