- By Musa Abdullahi Krishi

The Senate has mandated its Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions to screen Godwin Emefiele as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The committee has one week to screen the CBN governor and report back to the Senate for further action.

Emefiele was last week nominated for a second term of five years by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari said the Senate should consider and clear the CBN governor for the apex bank’s position.

At yesterday’s plenary, Senate Leader Sen Ahmad Lawan (APC, Yobe) moved for the consideration of Emefiele’s nomination. Deputy Minority Leader Sen Philip Aduda (PDP, FCT) seconded the motion.

Senate President Bukola Saraki referred the nomination to the banking, insurance and other financial institutions’ committee to screen the nominee and report back in one week.
