Lack of LG election in Kogi condemnable — Centre

- From Itodo Daniel Sule, Lokoja

The Centre for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution (CHRCR), a non- governmental organization, has condemned the non-conduct of local government election in Kogi State since the expiration of elected council officials about three years ago.

Executive Director of the Centre, Comrade Idris Miliki, made the condemnation yesterday in Lokoja during a one-day quarterly review meeting organized by the centre in collaboration with the Yar’adua Foundation for media and CSOs on anti-corruption, transparency and accountability in elections.

Miliki, while berating Governor Yahaya Bello for failing to conduct local government election to pave way for democratically elected council chairmen after spending more than three years in office, described the existence of administrators in the state as illegal.

He maintained that Kogi had no excuse not to conduct council election if other northern states such as Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe and Borno which were facing serious security challenges could conduct council elections.

Miliki, while calling on the government for conduct of council poll without further delay, observed that the non -conduct of election was encouraging corruption, lack of accountability and transparency as well as retarding the needed developments at the grassroots level.
