Wheat farmers lament poor price in Kano
Wheat farmers in Kano state have raised concern over poor price of the produce, describing the situation as threat to wheat production in the state.
Speaking to Chronicle, Kano state Chairman of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Alhaji Farouk Rabi’u Mudi said the association was trying to come up with modalities that would address the problem.
“Last year by this time, wheat in the open markets was sold at N18, 000 per bag which we believe is a reasonable price to start with, but as I speaks now, wheat is selling at less than N14, 000 per bag. This is indeed unfortunate and also detrimental to wheat farmers in the state. Many farmers have succumbed to middlemen’s skirmish approach by buying direct from famers at a giveaway price,” he said.
He added that, AFAN had been in talks with relevant bodies to address the situation stressing that the association was also in talks with the management of yet to be commissioned multi-billion naira Agro-Commodity Exchange Centre in Gezawa for possibility of exploring the opportunities provided by the centre.
